Rejecting the Ridiculous Idea that the Bible Ever Allowed Slavery

Before you ask “why,” ask “if.”

Many ask, “Why does the Bible allow slavery?” They accept the common impression that it does, then wonder why God wouldn’t abolish such an atrocity.

But is it true? Does the Bible allow slavery?

Absolutely not. It never did.

Some critics camp on passages like Leviticus 25:44: “you may buy male and female slaves.” They wield these words as proof-texts that God is a moral monster. If you accept these attacks and never look deeper, it certainly looks as though God is culpable in evil practices. If you let these ideas fester, they can poison your faith in who this God is.

God gave Israel an entire law code. Every law is connected to every other law. None of these passages are given in isolation.

Therefore, to properly evaluate passages Leviticus 25, we have to look at the regulations God gave previously (as a foundation) and subsequently (as a clarification).

And they completely destroy any idea that Leviticus 25 is talking about slavery.
