Influence of social media on students

Influence can be good or bad, but when it becomes an addiction, its results are drastic. With the rapid development of technology, now the whole world is globalized. And social media has a worth playing role in closing people to each other. Social media has put a prominent influence in the lives of people of every age, and so college students. Today, college students are more seem to have pined with social media. “BBC news research (2013) their research discuss that sixty-seven percent Facebook users very common and well known social media portal comprised of the youth and students so this compliment the fact the youth and student have more focus and relation such asocial media the negative use of social media occur when students involve themselves in unethical activities on social media portal, sharing of useless information, and posting such as images that are injurious national dignity and the foreign relationship of the country” (Sekho, 2013).

Social media has its pros and cons. “Social media having various impacts on youth’s life in both ends some time impacts are in the favor of youth’s social life and sometimes theses impact are negative to its user”( Anthony2009). It is difficult to eliminate any impact. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media networks have an engaging part in the lives of young minds. However, we cannot say that social media is having all to all a bad impact, social media is playing a vital role in educating and refining the lifestyles of students. There is a list of the advantages of social media.

First, some of the educational material is easily available on social media. Students on social media networks easily informed of new studies and career opportunities. Many short courses are held through Facebook pages. “Learning colleges have the ability to connect with students through social media networks such as Facebook, Google Plus groups, and YouTube. These channels can be used to communicate campus news, make announcements and provide students with useful information. This builds engagement between the College and students which help tackle many student issues through the group interactions”(Khanyie Dlamini). Thus social media plays a vital role in educating the students.

Second, it is easy to get research work through social media. Students get reliable research work on social media that helps them in their studies. Khanyie Dalmini, explains research work in his article as,” Social media offers audience and subject monitoring tools that are useful and it is one of the best platforms to extract data. You can find out how the majority people feel about a particular topic or how experts perceive and advice on specific issues”. Students may find it pretty much easier to collect information and do research work on the internet than going libraries and research institutes.

Third, social media provide students to connect with their friends and family on social media. Students may easily connect with their classmates at any time and anywhere. It also helps to exchange information and assignments. They can help each other in exams preparations. They also share their interests and it matures their friendship. So we can say that social media brings minds together and close. It charges the social life of students through the same interest, hobbies, and learning.

Similarly, social media has many cons or bad influences on learners’ lives. Social media has become an addiction for students in this modern age. Students spend most of their time on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social networks. They spend time on social media but for no use. In an article on “Medium” we can have research about the number of students on social media, it says that “. In 2007, the number of students who used Facebook was already enormous: 92 percent of college students had an account. By 2008, 99 percent of students had an account on Facebook. That is quite a large amount considering the service was only opened in 2006 to everyone”. This you can say a very quantify the range of students on students before a decay. The facts must have changed now. Somehow, this rapid increase of students on social media can have a devastating influence over their studies.

Another disappointing fact is that social media is affecting the mental health of the students severely. Social media has become an addiction for them and it is affecting their lives and studies. This addiction is making them mentally sick. Also, there are some physical issues like severe headaches, weak eyesight, and heart. But mental issues and problems are even more. Depression, social isolation, anxiety, aggression, and other mental health problems are the results of the excessive usage of social media by college students. In an article by The Conversation, “1 in 5 college students have anxiety or depression and excessive usage of social media may be a leading factor in symptoms”. This is the most pathetic situation one can say.

some other crimes have seen on social media that are attempted by students. these include; cyberbullying, stalking, oversharing, and fake identities. Students are negatively taking social media. They get absorbed in social media that they don’t pay attention to their studies and exams and thus they fail.”Social media has crippled my students when it comes to interacting with one another in person. Their very ability to communicate is deteriorating,” says McAbee, who teaches 11th grade English in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
