Tech communities can make you a better developer

Learning is no different. We learn and acquire knowledge in a specific area -based on our unique backgrounds and approach. And as we share our experience with others in similar or dissimilar fields we get better. As we discuss and talk about the opportunities and challenges each of us face — we discover new possibilities, come up with new ideas and find out better ways to solve a problem — something that is not possible otherwise.

I moved to Singapore 7 years ago and building the iOS community in Singapore was a delightful experience for me. It was not my first effort to create or get involved in a tech community.

I moved to Bangalore and worked there for a year before moving to Singapore. It was after I moved to Singapore I started to attend some community events and later got involved in organizing few.

Jason went on to introduce me to few people from the tech community in Singapore, and we collaborated on some fun projects. We even drove to KL to attend a Hackathon. It was my first overnight Hackathon — we finished the project. I had a sense of accomplishment.

… Jason would usually inform me about any new cool event he was planning to attend. I would just follow him along, get to meet interesting people, share ideas and talk really about random stuff that we like.

1st iOS Dev Scout — Hackathon

We have our meetups every month which is usually well attended. We often had problems in finding speakers for the meetups. So for first few months, it was either me and Mugunth who would come up with some topic and share at the meetup. And we never stopped the meetup. Slowly we grew …

From a google group to Facebook and meetup.com the journey was long but a memorable experience for me.

Me with Melvin, Kale, and Aizat (R to L)

Last year I decided to step down from the meetup group and the conference as an organizer. I later changed my mind and did the conference again this year. But I stopped organizing the meetups. The meetup is still happening Today, and these 3 guys are doing an excellent job to keep the community alive.

There are a lot of people out there who have exceptional skills that we may not have. It’s worth meeting those people; it’s worth having a conversation with them. It’s worth sharing with them what we know ourselves. Amazing things start to happen when we meet new people and share ideas.

If you liked reading this article, I hope you will attend a meetup near you if you are not already doing so. I hope you will get to meet some awesome people in these events and have a fantastic experience like me.
