Why Putting Things Front and Centre Will Change Your Life Forever

A strategy I used to help adopt new habits

I learned about a trick with leftover food from dinner parties on Reddit. Say you attend a party and there’s a lot of food left, so the host puts it into a container and leaves it in the fridge for you. Usually, when the time comes to leave, you do not think about the leftover food from the fridge, so you forget to take it. Or you are out at a friend's and they have a book you want to borrow from them. But with all the talking, drinks, and board games, you forget about it at the end of the night and leave without the book.

The trick is to leave your keys with the item. At the end of the night, you will go to your car, but realize you can’t open or start your car without your keys. So when you go to find your keys, you will find them right next to the item you wanted to bring along, and so you remember to take along the item with you.

I thought this was a great trick, except I’m not out at dinner parties that often. I thought about how I could apply it to my life, and I found I could leave the ‘keys’ out to help me adopt new habits. Here’s how it works:
