You say I talk too much
I bemoan the fact that you don’t, at all
And when I try so hard to keep it all in
Your searing gaze draws
the depths of my soul out
for your amusement.
I hate it so much.
I want to so badly stop this freefall
Of getting sucked deeper into the
Vortex of your love.
Between you and me,
There’s a towering wall
Of this side and the other,
Of how little and too much,
Of ourselves, we can afford to give
Before it ruins one of us.
A thin veil separates us by inches
Stretch your hands a little more,
And you could feel how my skin wakes
Up to your touch.
I try and reach out to you,
But you keep getting pulled, further away from me
Like poetry I cannot decipher the meaning of.
And yet, I’ll never know
How you read me out like
The pages of a book you’ve
Mastered in a different lifetime.
But you know what?
There can be no end
Because you wouldn’t let the beginning of Us
Take over your heart.
We’ll keep chugging in fits and starts,
Like a vintage car too out-of-place,
but too precious
To give away.
We’ll keep meeting at crossroads
And scarring each other
With nasty whispers of recrimination.
“Why don’t you just tell me what you feel?” I’d go, belligerent,
“Stop trying to put a name to it!” you would rebel.
And on and on we would keep
Moving along,
Hurtling at the same speed, and still poles apart
Writing ourselves down into the grindstone
Of fate. Or whatever you’d like to call it.
With you hoping you never have to
Conclude this tale,
With me hoping we would become the short stories
We’ve been trying to write for so long.
You and me, short and sweet
Epic in our “smallness”
Beautiful in the shortness of our time together.
