PHOTOGRAPHY AND FRAME

By Jianming Lin

A contemporary building with an expressive massing thanks to the use of shadows and light.

Figure 1 Marin country civil center shooting by Erza Stoller, 1963

Photographer Ezra Stoller captures the modernism architecture landmark by shooting in black and white on camera to present the large scale of the building from a low angle. Ezra specializes in navigating through the space in order to emphasize the structure and material usage in the building(see figure 1), giving sense of the building’s relationship to its setting. His iconic use of shadow and light guide the audience across the space to deepen the meaning of the image, where the exterior and interior space highlight the structure and the material of the modern architecture.

My project work was inspired by Ezra Stoller’s photography which express massing thanks to the use of shadow and light. The photograph taken in the UTS building 7 in the daylight, where my images are presented in black and white form in order to remove the color interference(see Figure 2)and allow the viewer to focus on the structure of the architecture, making the picture more abstract and concise.

I chose shooting this photography at noon and uses sunlight that highlights the building’s line, shadow and structure when i transfer the photo to black and white(see Figure 3), outlines the complex and irregular building surface that explains the modernity and functionality of this building

My photography shows space from outside to inside, I have used low angle and vertical perspectives to outline the large scale of the UTS building 7 (see Figure 4 & 5) while shooting from outside also allows natural light to flood into the building, exploring the depth of the building.

By curving and canting the building form, the architects allows the building to absorb the maximum amount of sunlight, providing a bright and relaxed learning environment to the students that communicate the relationship of the modern architecture and nature.

Allowing me as a tiny form to experience the exterior and interior space of the building that build the connection between the building and city (see Figure 6), its development space provides quiet and comfortable room for the dense urban city. Hundreds of regularly ordered mosaic windows are effectively used to maximize the natural light to coexist its internal space and natural environment(see Figure 7).

From learning of the technique and ideas from Ezra Stoller’s photography, understand of urban construction and connection with the nature in the urban city. This architecture design takes full advantage of the natural environment to make effective use for its development space and unique design of building allows to grad the people’s attention at the first time.
