Tell Your Story

A menu of perspectives. The same perspectives we choose to serve upon the ears of the world with every syllable that slips past our lips. I flick nervously through this menu, pausing briefly to consider long-forgotten dishes and countless intriguing glimpses into realms that spark my interest — but no.

Absolutely not, that will not do.

Since when did I think that my curious ways would be a convincing argument to those who already know how to play?

I flip and I skip, through dishes that pose some risk, to the persona I have chosen to play today, without a doubt they will question the claims that I make. Do its ingredients align with my morals at the moment, is the price even worth it? Think twice before you trust it. Will its lack of exquisite cheese or its sweltering, steaming spice expose the true me that’s inside or my false illusion of yes-I’m-trying-to-eat-vegan pride?

Am I even me, can they see, as they stare into my soul, wondering why such a simple decision has brought me such agony as I question my core beliefs and how they have pressed me into a stuttering, stumbling, simply stuck in fear of mumbling, fit over a menu of me’s, oh which one will I be! Which one can I be?

My indecisive brain, miserably failing to select one — it’s just one.

“Tell your story”, they tell me.

I close the menu of perspectives. It can wait.

“Tell your story”, I say. I sigh and I sway, that’s enough words for today. Your curious ways, do not apologize; when we begin, they may frighten, but soon prove to enlighten. You’ll never know until it’s too late, so take pride in the words that you speak, the stories that you breathe.

Please don’t be afraid to take that leap.
