Breakpoints

Let us talk about the breakpoint when it comes to a responsive website.

So how do we spot breakpoints when you look at an existing responsive website?

Here is a list of things to keep in mind to help you.

Well, that is all good and dandy but where do you pick your breakpoints?

We can define the breakpoints based on specific devices, products, brand names. We can do this but we will definitely run into maintenance issues down the road.

We shouldn’t choose breakpoints at all. Instead, we should find them, using our content as a guide. — Scott Yale

Thank you, Mr.Yale. I couldn’t have put it better myself.

So let me show you some examples.

From what I commonly saw is to break down the website to be adaptable for three major size screens. The first one is for the mobile screen and when the website hits below 550px apply the breakpoint. The second one is for the tablet or phablet and the example above is 550px and up but below 700px both exclusive. Lastly, we have one for the computer screen, we can apply this breakpoint when the screen hits 700px and up.

To reiterate:

These values are not engraved in stone but helpful to keep in mind as a guideline

Thank you for reading!

Happy coding!
