Liz Truss and the Tories Covered for My Lazy Ass in September

The dollar’s Hot and the pound’s Not, which helped me earn my monthly sub

It makes sense that any improvement from rock bottom is…uh…still an improvement.

Apologists for the UK prime minister, Liz Truss, and the chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, have been quick to point out that the pound has risen back to the level it enjoyed before the recent ‘mini-budget’.

I wrote eight stories last month compared to the six in August, and I have earned a penny more too. That’s an improvement in both output and earnings. What more could you want? Praise, please.

While I try to laugh my way through the horror that is the state of the UK economy at present (it ain’t easy!), there are some interesting observations to be made about my earnings.

My total for September was US$5.66 or GBP£5.14*. The only month I earned less was my first and that’s because only the last two days counted — I’d just joined the Medium Partner Program.

In August I’d made $5.96 or £5.13; my takings were over seven dollars in July.

The monthly UK subscription to Medium is £4.99 and two months ago I had to earn $6.11 to cover it.

I’m not into economics or numbers in general, but even I can see that the bar to entry is dropping for me. The problem is that this ain’t a good thing.

As usual this monthly peek at my earnings is a bit of fun. I’ve nothing to teach you and I have no excuses to offer either.

It’s true that circumstances curtailed some of the stories I was thinking of writing, but there was nothing to stop me writing at all — no prior commitments, no block. I was just too goddamn lazy.

Oh, I’ll make some of my usual vague promises to improve this month. I will do better. I promise.

The truth is, though, that because I make this up as I go along I won’t know until 1 November what’s going to happen.
