Impactful Person

One of the most impactful people in my life is someone who I’ve never actually met. He doesn’t know my name, age, or virtually anything about me, nor I about him; my only form of recognition is by my white Mazda, his only form of recognition is his old, black Lab, slow but determined stride, and worn sneakers. Yet, without fail, he walks up and down my road daily, through the sunniest of days to the most unbearable ones, waving to each car that passes by, with the same huge smile that always brightens my day. It’s quite ironic that I feel so impacted by this person that is largely just walking his dog, but it has become something I look forward to after a hard day at school, when I’m too focused on other stressful aspects of my personal life, or simply in need of a kind gesture. I’ve found that it’s extremely easy to become so caught up in the stresses and chaos within life that you forget about the good in it, and for awhile, I lost that focus. During those times however, even for just a moment, I was able to set aside my trivial worries and simply focus on something we all seem to take for granted and underestimate the importance of: being kind. With this stranger’s impact, I’ve learned to be that person for others, regardless if I know them, no matter what environment I may be in, in the instance that it’ll make their day a little better. It’s made me realize that if I can, even for a simple moment, make someone smile, help someone in need, hold the door for someone behind me, or even simply let someone else go before me at an intersection, it’s infectious, and will likely continue to leave a positive impact on others through the people I’m kind to. In life, I think it’s so easy to focus on the big moments that shape and alter the way you feel, and ignore the smaller ones. However, with one simple smile and wave from a complete stranger, it has made some of my worst days more bearable, and my best days even greater.
