What Kind Of Viewer am I?

When people first meet me, I assume they think all kinds of things about me. I assume they think I’m too quiet or that I have an odd shirt on. I assume because I work as a mechanic people think that cars are all I know. On the other hand I don’t think people think about how I view films. To be honest I never really thought about how I view films.

While thinking about this, one of the biggest things I’ve noticed about my viewing habits is my criteria for if I actually think a film is good. If I am enjoying a film, I will put all distractions aside and just watch. If I really am not into a movie I will zone out and just be playing on my phone. A good example of that is when my girlfriend’s family watch Star Wars. I just can’t get into those films, and every time they put a Star Wars film on I tend to zone out. I’m not a big fan of fantasy type films, something I’ve often been criticized for, because I don’t like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Star Trek. I think it’s because I don’t get as wrapped up in fiction as a lot of people do. For some reason I can’t enjoy it because I know it’s too far from reality in my mind. I have to relate to what is happening in the story for it to interest me or have some logical sense of the world building as well as the plot. Another example, my girlfriend and I watched Mr. and Mrs. Smith and I just couldn’t get passed how the agencies were supposedly run.

It just drove me insane that there was no reason for the agencies to exist. You have these two supposedly high level super secret spy agencies that have absolutely no reason to exist and they do nothing of any importance. This bothers me so much that it completely ruins the movie for me. I know the point of the movie is to be hot and sexy and mysterious, and the spy thing is a reason that they are the way that they are. How unstructured the spy organizations were, drove me absolutely insane, that’s all I could think about the whole movie. I guess as a viewer I care more about the logistics and a good plot over theatrics.

The film Ocean’s 11 is a very good example of a well executed spy movie compared to Mr and Mrs Smith. In Oceans 11 there is a reason that they all end up together and they all have backgrounds and a reason for all the characters in the film. The plan is laid out and there is still mysteriousness of those elements most spy type films have, but there is a reason for all of it. It is not just there because someone decided that it would tie a movie together. That style of film just clicks with me better because there is more of a realist type feel to the film. I have realized that I enjoy a slightly more realist approach to movies.

Another film that really appeals to me is Trains Planes and Automobiles. This film has been near and dear to me my whole life . I was introduced to this film by my dad. This is by far his favorite movie and also one of my favorite movies. Me and him have watched it together pretty much every Thanksgiving. The film lays the comedy out in a unique way in my opinion. There are a lot of very deadpan moments in the film. How Steve Martin’s character interacts with John Candy’s character makes for a timeless duo. It pulls the viewer in from the second they meet. In that first scene that they are both in where John Candy so obviously steals Steve Martin’s can you get a very good feel for how these two will interact for the rest of the film.

One of the biggest things that makes this film timeless is the odd but realistic situations they end up in. This makes it so I as the viewer can relate to the film much more. There are a lot of situations that make you feel empathy for the Steve Martin and John Candy’s characters. That makes the film very personal in my opinion. The fact that this film has an underlying personal and empathetic touch while still being so funny is amazing. It is truly an art form in my opinion. This movie masters making the viewer feel emotion and the fact that it has never gotten old to me is amazing. Also this is the ultimate movie for one liners.

The film Baby Driver uses another form of medium to help you feel the empathetic approach to the film. The movie itself is a very good film with a very clear well directed story. The way the actors portray their characters definitely helps set the mood of the film and really do a good job at making the viewer feel empathy. The biggest thing that makes this movie stand out from other films is the score. The music in this film is amazing and that is what makes this such a stand out film in my opinion. If the score were to be different and less driven by the exact scene in the film, this film would lose a lot of its appeal to many viewers.

The fact that music plays a massive role in the plot of this film. One of the main points of the film is the music. Baby can only drive when has his music. The fact that much of the film is spent listening from Baby’s point of view really gives it a unique twist which I think makes this film so good. It is rare to see a film so driven by it’s soundtrack. Another thing that makes this film’s soundtrack standout is the fact that is uses very unique songs. There are not your top 40 pop songs that you hear in many modern films. There are very unique songs that are not very common at all. The fact that songs like “Hocus Pocus” by Focus are in in this film and they tie in perfectly is incredible to me. All of the music flows so well with the film throughout the movie, it is simply amazing.

The musical aspect of Baby Driver is definitely what attracted me to the film. I love music, it holds a very special place in my heart. I have been playing and making music for over six years now. Due to that I feel that is why Baby Driver has had such an impact on me. There are weird songs in the soundtrack that I knew that I thought would never make their way in a large scale film. This really grabs the attention of music enthusiasts, it almost gives a whole different form of empathy than the film itself. Music is powerful stuff and it has a large impact on a lot of films.

The film Home Alone has for some reason a magical sound track in my opinion. I know it is a cheesy movie but the music has so much emotion. Home Alone has such an emotional soundtrack, it speaks to the viewer. The film is corny but it has a certain feeling of emotion that is underlying in the soundtrack.

I have realized that as a viewer there I am pickier than I ever thought I was. I like films where I can feel empathy and feel emotion for the film and the characters. I like to have a connection to the film and I care that the film is done with the story in mind. I definitely have trouble with fiction. The paradox of fiction is definitely true with me I really have a hard time with that, I almost wish I didn’t. I also feel it gives me a different outlook than many film viewers so I’m okay with it. I only feel the paradox of fiction hit hard with great big saga type stories. I can still enjoy a lot of fiction but I definitely have strong feelings of paradox of fiction.

One of the biggest things that I have noticed in my viewing practices is that I notice the soundtracks than I feel the average viewer does. In all of my favorite movies I know the soundtrack almost better than the film itself. I realized two of my favorite movies Baby Driver and The Big Lebowski have two amazing soundtracks. I didn’t realize that music played such a big factor in how I viewed films. Music can make or break a film in my opinion, and that’s something I believe. Music I believe is one of the biggest things that impacts how I view a film. If the music is good, I am far more inclined to enjoy the film.
